Laparoscopic Surgery Q & A

What is laparoscopic surgery?

Also known as “keyhole surgery,” laparoscopic surgery involves small incisions through which a tiny video camera and specialized instruments are inserted. This minimally invasive approach allows surgeons to operate with precision while reducing trauma to surrounding tissues — leading to less post-operative pain, shorter recovery times, and smaller scars.

With advancements like robotic-assisted systems, the scope of laparoscopic procedures continues to grow. At Angelina Surgical Associates, our surgeons are trained in the latest laparoscopic and robotic techniques to deliver safe and effective outcomes.

Laparoscopic procedures are typically performed under general anesthesia. A small incision — about half an inch — is made near the surgical site. Carbon dioxide is gently introduced to expand the area, creating room for visualization and surgical access.

A laparoscope (a thin tube with a camera) is inserted, transmitting real-time video to a monitor. Additional small incisions may be made for surgical tools. Laparoscopy can be both diagnostic and therapeutic, helping your surgeon diagnose and treat conditions in one procedure.

The primary benefit of laparoscopic surgery is reduced impact on the body. Smaller incisions mean:

  • Faster healing
  • Reduced scarring
  • Less internal trauma
  • Shorter hospital stays and downtime

However, not all procedures are ideal for laparoscopy. In cases requiring more access or flexibility, traditional open surgery may be recommended. To extend laparoscopic capabilities, we also offer robotic-assisted surgery using the da Vinci® Surgical System, which provides even greater precision through surgeon-controlled robotic arms.
